Bodmin, Cornwall
Check In, Lock Down
Where Cornish granite and centuries of secrets become the most compelling room you have ever called your own.
Few hotels dare to make a virtue of their darker past, but Bodmin Jail Hotel wears its history with remarkable confidence. Carved from the granite bones of an 18th-century Cornish prison, this singular property offers 70 luxury rooms where original cell doors and iron bars have been retained not as curiosities, but as design statements — reminders that the most compelling spaces are those with stories to tell. Rates from £194 per night for bed and breakfast, or £301 for the full Prisoner Experience, feel entirely justified when the setting is this extraordinary.
Beyond the rooms, the hotel invites guests to inhabit history rather than merely observe it. Heritage tours illuminate centuries of incarceration and Cornish life, while after-dark ghost walks transform the ancient corridors into something altogether more spine-tingling. For dinner, The Chapel restaurant offers a fittingly dramatic backdrop — vaulted, atmospheric, and utterly unlike anywhere else in Cornwall. It is the kind of place where conversation flows easily, because the walls themselves seem to have something to say.
Bodmin Jail Hotel is not simply a place to sleep — it is a fully immersive encounter with the past, packaged with genuine luxury and delivered with flair. History lovers and seekers of the truly unique will find no better reason to linger in Cornwall. Book it before someone else takes your cell.

What They Say
“An amazing place to stay, full of atmosphere. Really well appointed but keeps it's traditional feel. Rooms are spacious, with three cells being turned into one room. All the features remain, with small barred windows and open brickwork so you never actually forget where you are. There are little notices around the Hotel, including your room, that tells you interesting things about the Jails past and what happened at certain places. The staff are really helpful and very pleasant. The food in the Restaurant is amazing and really well presented.”
“Our second stay here, and somehow we’ve fallen even more in love with this hotel. From the moment you walk in, the design wraps you in this perfect mix of style and coziness. The layout feels so clever and unique, the colors are warm and inviting, and the lighting creates such a relaxing atmosphere that you instantly feel at home. It’s genuinely one of the most memorable and beautifully designed places we’ve ever stayed, and we’ve found ourselves noticing new little details each time we come back. Breakfast in the chapel restaurant is another highlight. The setting is absolutely charming, and the menu offers so many delicious choices that it’s hard not to linger over that extra cup of coffee. Everything is fresh and full of flavor, which makes the whole experience feel like a treat rather than just a morning meal. This hotel just keeps getting better for us, and we’re already looking forward to returning again.”
“Thoroughly enjoyable short stay at this very interesting hotel that has been tastefully turned from an ancient prison to a very comfortable place to dine and stay over. I was very impressed how original features had been incorporated to retain a spirit of what it was whilst providing all the facilities of a top hotel. Excellent evening meal (a perfect steak!) but 1 star dropped for a slightly lacklustre ‘full Cornish’ breakfast. All staff friendly and efficient.”
“Another visit to Bodmin Jail Hotel, this time for afternoon tea in The Chapel restaurant and champagne bar. The afternoon tea was one of the best I have had! Cocktails too are amazing. One of my favourite places to visit, I love driving down from Plymouth to visit The Chapel, in addition to seeing Rei and Wilson who are the kindest and most welcoming managers/staff at the hotel. They make the visit more special. Thank you again!”
“We stayed here earlier this year and had a lovely stay. We came here as it's dog friendly which is great. Before we booked I rang reception to enquire if there was anywhere in the hotel we could have a meal that was dog friendly. I was told that food is just available in the rooms if you have a dog. Therefore we make a reservation to eat somewhere else. When we checked in; the receptionist asked if we would be dining with them as dogs are allowed in the cocktail bar and meals can be eaten in there. If we had know this beforehand, we wouldn't have booked for elsewhere. There are nice touches in the room for dogs with a bed, blanket, and bowl. A bonus getting a free sausage at breakfast which was greatly received by our golden retriever. We had a really pleasant stay, and would definitely return. I am only giving 4 stars instead of 5, as there are no dog poo bins on site. I asked reception who told me there are no bins what so ever on site, and she directed me to walk off the hotel site, and find a bin in the car park across the road. After taking a short walk around the site I managed to find 2 regular bins on site, but the place really needs an actual dog poo bin for a dog friendly hotel.”
