Bodysgallen Hall & Spa in Llandudno, Conwy — Historic Country House

Llandudno, Conwy

History, Hills and Pure Indulgence

Where Snowdonia's grandeur meets centuries of unhurried country house grace.

Perched above the North Wales coastline with Snowdonia's ancient peaks as its backdrop, Bodysgallen Hall is one of those rare places that makes the idea of leaving the country feel entirely unnecessary. This Grade I listed, 17th-century manor — one of only three Historic House Hotels held in trust by the National Trust — unfolds across more than 200 acres of glorious parkland, its honey-stone façade presiding over gardens that include a remarkable parterre of box hedges and sweet-scented herbs unchanged since the 1600s. Conwy Castle shimmers on the horizon; a log fire crackles in the drawing room. History, here, is not merely decorative — it is deeply, gloriously lived in.

For couples in search of a genuinely romantic escape, Bodysgallen delivers with quiet confidence. Bedrooms in the hall itself carry all the atmosphere you would hope for — antique furnishings, views that stretch to the mountains and the sea — while spa cottages offer a more secluded retreat steps from the wellness facilities. The spa provides a welcome counterpoint to all that heritage grandeur: a place to slow down, be looked after, and emerge restored. Treatments, spa days, and seasonal offers ensure that indulgence is always within easy reach.

What elevates Bodysgallen beyond a mere historic novelty is its warmth — the sense that country house hospitality here is not performed but genuinely felt. Seasonal celebrations such as St David's Day luncheons, complete with live harp music and Welsh-inspired menus, root the experience firmly in place and culture. Whether you arrive for a long weekend of spa indulgence, a self-catering cottage escape, or simply to wander gardens that have been tended for centuries, Bodysgallen Hall offers something increasingly rare: the feeling that time, for once, is entirely on your side.

What They Say

Went for festive afternoon tea. We were the only people in the afternoon tea room. It’s located in a 16th century wing with very traditional decor. There was a haunted feel about the place and for the most part, we were alone without any staff waiting on us. I think they forgot about us. Before leaving, we weren’t even sure where to pay. The food was nice but not worth the money we paid.

A great hotel, very traditional, it's like going back in time. Staff were great. Breakfast was decent, but not spectacular. We can't recommend the restaurant, happy to pay £££s if it's decent, but it was bland, all for show, but very little taste. Disappointing. You get a better meal out in the town for half the price, and full of flavour (try the Seahorse). We found the 12.5% service charge on everything a cynical attempt to drive up prices, drinks over priced too, plus the service charge on top. My wife used the Spa and she was very complimentary with the treatment as service. All in good, but don't think you are getting a good deal on the restaurant, that bits is a let down and could be much better... Or charge less and do something with more flavour and less flounce!

A lovely country hotel tucked away in a quiet spot near Llandudno. We had a cottage suite which was roomy, quirky and charming. Sadly the beds were so uncomfortable and the couch in the lounge section had long had its day!, so uncomfortable. The breakfast was nice but service was slow and muddled at times (think this was due to foreign staff with limited English) For the high price a tad disappointing to be honest. However a great spot to explore North Wales… Portmeirion, Conwy etc

It is a great place full of character and old world charm. But expensive so good as a treat. The evening menu didn't change for the two nights we were there, which was a surprise. The breakfasts could have had more imagination.

Location is out of the way, need to drive. Went for afternoon tea. Great service, very friendly staff, presentation of food amazing, food was full of flavour. Recommend the afternoon tea. Price reflected the high standard of food. Didn't see rooms.
