Feversham Arms Hotel & Verbena Spa in Helmsley, North Yorkshire — Country Hotel & Spa

Helmsley, North Yorkshire

Moors, Pools & Candlelit Evenings

A Mediterranean soul with a Yorkshire heart, waiting quietly in Helmsley.

Tucked into the heart of Helmsley's charming market town, the Feversham Arms Hotel & Verbena Spa pulls off a quietly impressive trick: the feeling of a Mediterranean escape, transplanted seamlessly into the soul of the North York Moors. Stone walls and wood-burning fires speak to its Yorkshire roots, while a chic terrace strung with twinkling lights and a poolside cocktail menu hint at something altogether more indulgent. It is the kind of place that makes you want to cancel your plans and simply stay longer.

At the centre of it all is the Verbena Spa, a genuinely tranquil retreat where the emphasis is firmly on transformative relaxation. The heated pool is the star of the show — the sort of languid, unhurried experience that feels worlds away from everyday life, even as the moors beckon just beyond the hotel's door. The 'You & Me Time' spa break, which pairs a 60-minute treatment with dinner and breakfast, is tailored perfectly for couples seeking a restorative escape without venturing far from home.

Dining here is its own quiet pleasure, with exquisite cuisine built around the finest regional ingredients — the kind of cooking that lets the landscape speak on the plate. For those who prefer the great outdoors, countryside pursuits and moorland walks are effortlessly within reach. The Feversham Arms is, in short, a genuinely lovely place to rediscover the art of doing very little, very well.

What They Say

We had a 3 night Christmas stay at Feversham Arms with our Dog (very dog friendly hotel) The welcome from the staff, and the manager, was warm and friendly, something which was maintained all the way through our stay. The rooms were wonderfully presented and cleaned to perfection. The tree and wreath on the door was a lovely touch, as was the fabulous hamper and doggy treats. It was a great way to start the stay. Throughout our stay everyone was friendly and helpful, from first thing in the morning, to late at night, even through the night, indeed 24 hours a day. And so to the food? There was not a meal that we didn’t like, or that we could criticise. Every meal was beautify cooked, tasty and hot (where required). The facilities were lovely, with the spa and pool taking top spot. We really enjoyed our morning swims, in a pool that was a luxurious temperature. We really appreciated all the staff giving up THEIR Christmas, to deliver US a faultless and fabulous Christmas. Definitely one to remember! This was the general feeling from all the guests we spoke to.

Outstanding hotel and spa!! When I say the service is faultless I really do mean it. The entire team from the minute you book until you leave, go out of their way to make your break special. We booked the “you and me” time package for one of our birthdays. Rooms: - beautifully decorated, large, fully equipped and designed beautifully (think country chic). - I ordered a balloon and gift set for the room. Really nice touch the team had left a card in the room wishing happy birthday. Service: - every single team member greeted us whether walking in a corridor, passing a room, in the restaurant… every one of them. Makes for such a welcoming experience. - They miss nothing. The internal communication between employees is so strong. They go above and beyond to ensure their guests are catered for. Food: This is a foodies venue! The chefs use local produce like venison, beef cheek, crab etc. One of us is admittedly slightly fussy, they tried some of the dishes but ordered room service back at the room afterwards. Just meant one of us had two lots of the dishes and honestly- zero complaints from the foodie!! The manager took the time on our departure to speak with us. They’d knocked the food service off the bill, explaining they will go out their way to make sure we had food we enjoyed. It really wasn’t a problem for us but again, great service, and next time we will speak with the team so please, also do the same if you just fancy a chicken wrap 🤣. Spa: We went for the mud wrap treatment and the staff were brilliant. Clearly super knowledgeable, the complimentary Sorbet after treatment was something we’ve not received at other venues either. Highlighting they do aim to set themselves apart and I’d say they do achieve this. Overall we really have zero negatives. From start to finish it was incredible and the reviews do not do this place justice. We love a spa break and we’ve done a lot of the Q hotels and honestly Feversham is miles ahead in every area. Thankyou to the entire team! You’re doing great things! We will 100% be back! Love Rachel and Bella- room 33

The hotel is set in a stunning location. The perfect escape for rest and rejuvenation. We were exceptionally well looked after, particularly by an Eastern European lady with blonde hair (regrettably, I didn’t catch her name). Her attentiveness and professionalism were outstanding. Despite our frequent changes to spa appointments and dining times, she accommodated us effortlessly and with genuine warmth. The spa treatments were exceptional. I opted for a full-body massage and a luxury pedicure, both of which were executed to the highest standard. Overall, an experience marked by impeccable service, attention to detail, and a genuine sense of care. Rochelle and JW

Sadly, the Feversham has taken a bit of the downturn in recent years. We are regularly visitors of the hotel and decided to do the spa, dinner, bed and breakfast package, which for nearly £600 we expected to be first class value. I’ll start with the positives. The spa remains excellent, staff are so helpful and friendly and our treatments were lovely and relaxing. The dinner was good too, not sure the value was good, with most mains costing £35+, but it was fine Dining and good service so no complaints. Our main issue was with our room. It was advertised as a spa view room, which as you can see from photos is a bit of a joke. We took our dogs and they only provide two rooms for these, so they should be more upfront on what room you get. Our shower was broken and water went everywhere, I can’t upload the videos but you get the idea. Finally, the air con was not working and the fixed towel rads were on full heat with no on off switch accessible. It meant we had a very hot night, with a desk fan keeping us awake. Whilst the hotel management were apologetic and did offer some gestures of goodwill, it did not negate the fact the rooms are tired, in need of significant re-investment, and it sadly changed the experience of our stay. I’d recommend whilst they fix these that people stay at the Black Swan and then just pay to use the spa.

This place is in need of some serious TLC and a new chef. Our suite was very tired - paid for a balcony, only problem was that the handle on the door was snapped off so it couldn’t be used. No phone in the room…which had them confused but not sorted throughout duration of stay. Shower stone cold which was fairly unpleasant. The evening meal was nothing short of shambolic - we actually ventured in to town at 9pm as we sent all the food back that was served. The spa is nice and the staff throughout are lovely. Wouldn’t visit again.
