Gilpin Hotel & Lake House in Windermere, Cumbria — Country House Hotel

Windermere, Cumbria

The Lake District, Perfected

Where Michelin stars meet misty Cumbrian mornings and no one wants to leave.

Tucked into 100 acres of ancient Cumbrian woodland, just a mile from the shimmering shores of Windermere, Gilpin Hotel & Lake House is the kind of place that ruins you for ordinary weekends. This is not one hotel but two distinct escapes — the convivial, amenity-rich Gilpin Hotel with its resident llamas, champagne bar, and 22 hot-tub suites, and the more secluded Lake House, where silence and luxury arrive in equal measure. Together, they form one of England's most quietly exceptional retreats, held together by a family and team whose warmth you feel from the first hello to the final farewell.

Food is taken seriously here — thrillingly so. SOURCE at Gilpin Hotel holds a coveted Michelin Star, delivering cooking that feels both rooted in landscape and lifted by ambition, while the pan-Asian Gilpin Spice offers something altogether more playful. The property's accolades read like a roll call of British hospitality's highest honours: AA Five Red Stars, two Michelin Hotel Keys, membership of Relais & Châteaux and Pride of Britain — each one earned, never assumed. Spa treatments draw on the expertise of ESPA and locally beloved Pure Lakes, making the Spa Space feel as considered as everything else.

Gilpin is the rare luxury property that doesn't feel like it's performing luxury — it simply lives it. Whether you're stealing away as a couple in search of a private spa lodge hidden among the trees, or arriving with an appetite and a reservation at SOURCE, the Lakes have never felt so effortlessly, completely yours. Book it before someone else does.

What They Say

My wife and I stayed for my Birthday weekend. Our Spa room was in a perfect location with great facilities, exactly what we needed to switch off and relax for a few days. Staff were attentive, friendly and paid great attention to our stay being to celebrate a Birthday. They couldn’t have been more welcoming and helpful. We ate in Source & Spice, both very different to each other but both absolutely excellent in their own way - I would highly recommend both. We will definitely be back!

My wife and I had a fantastic three days and nights here in a spa lodge to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary. The accommodation, location, staff and restaurants were all outstanding. The breakfast was varied, plentiful and delicious and the food in both restaurants was incredible. Gilpin Spice was more our thing because that’s the style of food we tend to eat anyway but Source was an experience and well worth a visit. Can’t fault anything and would highly recommend to anyone else thinking of a peaceful and luxurious retreat. We will be back one day.

Spent a wonderful two nights at the Gilpin. It is in a beautiful spot and very quiet area. The hotel is a great place to relax and all the team are friendly and professional. Our room was excellent and a hugely comfortable bed. Dinner in Source was excellent well and worth the Michelin star why though do they have bare tables at night but tablecloths for breakfast? This increases the noise levels as the floors are hard. Spice the following night was also excellent. Lovely staff and a great bustling atmosphere with great food. I highly recommend the Gilpin.

Our stay at the Gilpin Hotel was exactly what we’d hoped for — peaceful, indulgent, and beautifully run. The setting is stunning, with views that make you want to slow down and take everything in. From check-in to check-out, the staff were warm and genuinely attentive without being over the top. We stayed in one of the Spa Lodges, which felt like our own private retreat. The hot tub, steam room, and outdoor seating made it hard to leave the room. Every detail felt considered — from the lighting to the locally sourced toiletries. Dinner at SOURCE was a real highlight. The food was creative but not pretentious, with each course feeling like it had a story behind it. Breakfast the next morning was just as good, especially eaten outside with coffee and birdsong. It’s not a budget stay, but it’s clear why people come here for special occasions. If you’re looking for a mix of luxury, comfort, and real Lake District charm, Gilpin absolutely delivers.

My husband and I stayed at the Gilpin Hotel for a joint birthday and anniversary celebration. While the staff and service were excellent, several elements fell short of five-star standards. The hotel felt generally tired, and although our bedroom was comfortable, the bathroom was uncomfortably cold throughout all of our stay. The spa was small but excellent, and our dinner at Source was good ( although we had to send the scallops back to the kitchen them being inedible)with an impressive wine list, although there was a distinct lack of atmosphere. Despite mentioning our celebration at booking, the hotel made no acknowledgment, which was disappointing given the level of hospitality expected. The lack of a swimming pool, absence of lake views, and the hotel’s isolated location—requiring car travel—also detracted from the experience. Additionally, the 'unexpected' £29 nightly room-service charge we felt was totally unnecessary and unwarranted considering the high -cost ( even in low season)of the room. Overall, aside from the restaurant, the hotel felt more like an above-average property with an overly high price point. personally, we would not be tempted to return.
