Torquay's Victorian Gem Reimagined
Where English Riviera elegance meets heartfelt, unhurried hospitality.
Tucked within beautifully kept gardens just a four-minute stroll from the sparkling harbour and award-winning Meadfoot Beach, the Haytor Hotel is a lovingly preserved Victorian villa that has been welcoming guests since 1835. Owners John and Jane have cultivated something genuinely rare here: the warmth and attentiveness of a private home married to the polished comforts of a boutique hotel. Spacious suites β each crafted by ingeniously combining two original rooms β offer kingsize beds, walk-in showers, minibars, and plush robes, all finished to an impressively high standard that belies the hotel's accessible price point.

βGorgeous hotel. Set in beautiful grounds and very quiet, directly facing Haytor Rock on Dartmoor. We just spent a really wonderful, restful weekend there, recharging our batteries. We stayed in a lovely suite, on the ground floor with double patio door leading to our own patio and garden space. We parked the car immediately outside. So convenient. Very fog friendly. Can't wait to go back. Highly recommended πβ
βWe stayed at The Moorland Hotel Haytor in one of their dog friendly rooms and we had a really lovely experience. The staff were very friendly and helpful, made us feel welcome from the moment we arrived. The hotel itself is in a beautiful location with great views and surrounded by nature, perfect if you want some peace and fresh air. Our room was clean, comfortable, and had everything we needed. The food at the hotel was also really good, which made the stay even better. Overall, itβs a lovely place to relax, enjoy the scenery, and bring your dog along too. We really enjoyed our stay and would happily come back!β
βHotel is very welcoming. Room is fine. Dinner was delicious, I had goats cheese souffle, and pear crumble. The crumble was served with ice cream, not clotted cream, but this was quickly rectified when I mentioned it. Delicious!β
βI stayed for three January nights at the Moorland Hotel, and am so very glad I did. What a find! Friendly, comfortable, calm, well-run, in a stunning location, warm despite the icy weather sweeping the moor outside. The entire staff seemed both kind and competent from start to finish. My room was a classic double, not large but very pleasant, with everything I needed - super-comfortable, spotlessly clean, well-presented, the fridge and coffee maker an added bonus. Downstairs the cosy bar, restaurant and sofa-filled sitting room were a real pleasure. I'm a writer and spent wet days working with great coffee and excellent food. The location is impressive: walk out of the gate and you're immersed in natural beauty, with wild ponies grazing across the road. I'm told that the area gets busy in summer, but in early January there was no sense of that. Agatha Christie wrote her first book here, and I can totally see how The Moorland lent itself to creativity. I was sorry to leave and hope to return one day.β
βA group of 9 of us had lunch at the Tinpickle and Rhum restaurant yesterday after a long, windy and cool walk near Haytor on Dartmoor yesterday. The Moorland Hotel was warm and welcoming when we arrived. Our meals were delicious, the service excellent and the prices very reasonable. We had an enjoyable lunch party and thoroughly recommend this hotel. Like us, many other diners were accompanied by their dogs which caused no problems whatsoever.β
