Langley-on-Tyne, Northumberland
Where History Becomes Home
Sleep within walls that have stood since the age of knights, and wake to a Northumberland morning unlike any other.
Rising from the wooded heart of Northumberland like something conjured from a medieval dream, Langley Castle is not merely a place to stay — it is a place to be transformed. Built in the 14th century and fortified against the turbulence of its age, these ancient walls now shelter one of England's most romantically singular hotel experiences. Stone staircases wind upward to chambers dressed in rich fabrics and warm candlelight, where four-poster beds invite you to surrender entirely to the fantasy of another era. This is a staycation that renders the word itself almost inadequate.
For couples seeking an escape weighted with meaning and atmosphere, Langley Castle delivers with extraordinary conviction. The fortified walls — seven feet thick in places — create an almost cathedral-like sense of enclosure and sanctuary, hushing the modern world to a whisper. Every corridor tells a story, every window seat frames a view of ancient grounds that have barely changed across the centuries. History here is not a museum exhibit; it is the very texture of your stay.
Fine dining completes the picture with the elegance it deserves, drawing on the finest Northumbrian produce and presenting it with the ceremony such surroundings demand. Whether you raise a glass beside a roaring fire or steal a quiet moment in the grounds as dusk settles over the Tyne valley, Langley Castle offers something increasingly rare: the feeling that you have arrived somewhere truly, irreplaceably special. Book it before someone else does.

What They Say
“We’ve been a few times now, often around Christmas. The building and setting are stunning and the food is very nice, but the service is consistently a bit disappointing. This time we had a main course missing, drinks orders forgotten, and then a dessert/coffee missing, along with trouble to get the bill brought at the end. One problem seemed to be the the waiter present changed a lot during the meal. If they improved on this it would be 5/5.”
“Beautiful place, amazing service. Been going to Langley castle for over 11 years ( wedding anniversary). Got married here and love returning each and every year. Staff are always welcoming and we have a great time. On the expensive side but you get what you pay for.”
“Beautiful castle, now a hotel set in pretty grounds. We had a morning coffee in the lounge. This was cosy despite being huge. Resplendent in a regal red, it had several seated arrangements which were very inviting. Menus showed several options for afternoon tea as well as lunch. Downstairs allowed a peep into the formal dining room. Very luxurious with white linen table clothes. Id definitely love to book for dinner. The staff were very friendly and obliging.”
“We've recently enjoyed a 3 night DB&B stay at Langley Castle. The Castle and grounds are beautiful. Our Castle view suite was spacious with a very comfortable bed, a great en-suite and nice and clean. The food was imaginative, flavoursome and well presented and a nice drinks, wine and cocktails list added to the dining experience. The staff without exception were friendly, professional and a pleasure to meet. On Thursday evening some were put to the test but came through with flying colours. A problem in the kitchen lead to a slow service. We took the view we had no other pressing engagement to get to, we were sat in a warm pleasant environment and had a nice glass of wine to sip on. The food duly came and was delicious. Well done to all involved. We will be coming again sometime thank you”
“I wish I could give this hotel a rating higher than 5; the accommodations, service, and staff are excellent. The attention to detail and sense of professionalism is outstanding. It is wonderful for a romantic get-away or for weddings. The dining room is also excellent. The chef and the staff should be complimented for their menu and wine pairings. Well done. Situated 5 miles south of Haydon Bridge, the castle has an interesting history. It was finished in 1364 and burned in 1405 by troops of Henry IV, who were campaigning against the Percy family who owned the property. The property exchanged hands - between the crown and private owners - for centuries. It was bought in 1882 by Cadwallader Bates in 1882. The work was completed in 1912. It was converted into a hotel in 1986. This is a special place. Highly recommend, I would happily stay here again.”
