The Nare in Veryan-in-Roseland, Cornwall — Country House Hotel

Veryan-in-Roseland, Cornwall

Cornwall's Most Coveted Coastal Retreat

Where the Cornish cliffs meet five-star grace, and time slows to the rhythm of the tide.

Tucked away in a secluded bay on Cornwall's breathtaking south coast, The Nare is that rarest of things: a hotel that feels both grandly luxurious and deeply, genuinely personal. This privately owned, five-star country house has earned its reputation as the most comfortable hotel in Cornwall not through empty boasting, but through decades of quietly exceptional hospitality. Forty beautifully appointed bedrooms gaze out over Carne beach, the kind of unspoiled sandy cove that reminds you why Cornwall has enchanted travellers for generations, while manicured gardens and rolling hills frame the view in every direction.

What They Say

We visited with friends for afternoon tea one Saturday, and the adventure began before we’d even reached the hotel — the road in is charmingly narrow, so be prepared to practice your reversing skills (think of it as a warm-up before the scones). Parking, however, was a breeze, and before we’d even stepped inside, a staff member appeared with advice on where to go — like our own personal concierge ninja. Inside, we were greeted by Josh, who couldn’t have been more welcoming if he’d tried. He guided us to our table, explained everything perfectly, and somehow managed to be attentive, friendly, and professional all at once — a rare triple threat in hospitality. The food? Excellent. The setting? Beautiful. The view? So good it almost made us forget about calories. And the price? Very reasonable — which meant we could justify an extra beer (or two). We’ll definitely be returning for another afternoon tea, partly for the ambience of this amazing hotel… but mostly for Josh and the scones.

Staff are very professional... however, one or 2 were Victorian English. Felt like a commoner walking in on the royals... afternoon tea consisted of 2xsmall scones and ample cream... a choice of coffee and tea, Earl Grey is charged extra. So , the view, the ambience 80% of staff all get 5* 👏... but please accept day visitors as paying customers.

This hotel excels in so many different areas - the location and outlook from the rooms was great; the staff were exceptional; the dining was also something you would expect from a major city restaurant. We had a sea view room for a three day break and enjoyed every part of the experience. Afternoon tea with scones, jam and cream every day. It felt personal and the staff treated everyone well. We would certainly recommend this hotel for couples.

I’d so like to be effusive about this place as it clearly sees itself as very upmarket and strives for high standards, but something is off. It is very polite, but it is not truly welcoming, or certainly not to non residents visiting. There is a feeling of something I can’t quite put my finger on, but “up themselves” rather than truly hospitable is as close as I can get. Great if you like that sort of thing. Not so good if you don’t.

We didn't stay at the hotel as we are local but celebrated our anniversary there with a sumptuous 3 course lunch. All very nicely presented and made with wonderfully fresh ingredients. Will definately be going again. The service was excellent, as was the decor.... not to mention the fabulous ocean front vista from the Quarterdeck restaurant. We had a lovely afternoon there and plan to try their afternoon teas next!
