Tucked into the honey-stoned village of Painswick — the so-called 'Queen of the Cotswolds' — this quietly confident boutique hotel makes an irresistible case for staying closer to home. With just 16 rooms, The Painswick wears its intimacy as a badge of honour, wrapping guests in a palette of soothing greys that feels at once contemporary and deeply rooted in its surroundings. What They Say
“This hotel is close to perfect. The cozy room is exactly as described. Comfortable, but for the price, slightly expensive. The lounges are a lovely place to relax with open fires in the evening - although we constantly had to go and seek out staff to serve drinks. The slightly too loud background music was an irritating mix of 50s and 60s Xmas songs and trance and dance music. Please, one or the other! Preferably never the latter! The restaurant is a nice place to be. However the food was mixed. The cheese soufflé starter was fantastic and my wife’s venison main excellent. However, the beef wellington lacked a lining between the pastry and the duxelles which meant the pastry was a little soft and it came with a sauce which ruined the dish as it was far too acidic and overpowering. There is a lovely continental breakfast spread and the cooked breakfast is excellent - one of the best in fact. There are some other nice touches of detail which elevate the hotel above the ordinary such as a range of wellies for guest use and fresh milk in the rooms. The outside spaces are lovely and the village setting very pretty.”
“A beautiful hotel with amazing staff. We had a wonderful stay in late October; it was such a cozy and lovely experience. Every detail in the hotel felt thoughtfully curated, from the cozy rooms and elegant lounges to the balcony spaces and the beautifully scented products. The scenic views from the room windows were stunning. The food was phenomenal, and we were especially grateful for the care taken to accommodate our halal dietary preferences. Each dish was perfectly balanced, with flavours that complemented one another beautifully. Special thanks to Betsy, Isabella, Libby, and the chef for making our stay so memorable. We would absolutely stay here again. Also the night-sky was studded with stars ✨✨”
“Beautiful and cozy stay in a small village in the Cotswolds. I spent a very welcomed and comfortable birthday at this lovely hotel. Dinner, breakfast and afternoon tea were absolutely delicious. All the spaces in the hotel, the lounge, restaurant, rooms etc are beautiful in every corner. The service was amazing - every hotel staff was very friendly and made the stay so much more happier. ☺️ Will definitely return💗”
“While The Painswick is a "cute" hotel, the aesthetic couldn't make up for the poor functionality and upsetting service. Our room had bad ventilation, staying humid for hours after a shower, and the door slammed incredibly hard. The most significant issue was at breakfast. We waited 30 minutes for warm dishes even though we were the only ones there, but the service felt targeted and biased. When we weren't sure how the meal worked, the waiter snidely told us, "It says it in the menu," that there was a buffet. She then told us they only served French press, yet we watched her happily serve cappuccinos to white parties who arrived after us. When we approached her to make us three cappuccino after what we witnessed, she was "sassy" and annoyed, responding with a dismissive "yeah, yeah." Throughout the meal, the staff cleared plates for every table around us while ignoring ours entirely. The "sassy" and dismissive attitude was uncalled for and made us feel unwelcome. She continued to clear plates for every table except ours. As non-white guests, we felt clearly singled out by this unprofessional and unfriendly behavior. It completely soured our experience.”
“The Painswick is beatiful and the staff are wonderful. We had a fantastic meal in the restaurant. My only complaint is that our bathroom was FREEZING and so not very comfortable to be in. When the room was serviced the bathroom window and the bedroom window were left open. It was a really cold weekend we just wanted to feel cosy.”
