Where the Garden Does the Cooking
Rock-and-roll history, kitchen garden soul, and the gentle pull of Kent at its most indulgent.
Tucked into the Kent countryside less than an hour from London, THE PIG at Bridge Place is the kind of place that makes you wonder why you ever bothered with a passport. This 17th-century red-brick manor carries its history lightly — secret staircases wind past cosy corners, and the walls have absorbed the echo of Led Zeppelin and The Kinks from their early gigging days. It's eccentric, warm and entirely unself-conscious, which is precisely what makes it so irresistible.
The heart of the operation is the Kitchen Garden, reached by a bridge over tranquil water meadows and flanked by heritage glasshouses that supply the restaurant's famously hyper-local 25-mile menu. Dishes change daily, shaped by whatever the garden and neighbouring producers have to offer — this is seasonal eating taken seriously, without a scrap of pretension. Treatments in the Potting Shed rooms feel equally grounded, with natural Tribe517 products and the quiet rustle of the garden just beyond the door.
For those using Bridge Place as a base, Kent rewards the curious: vineyards, castles, coastal towns and wooded rambling trails all lie within easy reach of Canterbury. But be warned — the greater temptation is simply to stay put, wander the grounds with something local in your glass, and let the Kentish slow living do its quiet, persuasive work.

What They Say
“Beautiful Grade 1 building. Restaurant very good. Nice cosy feel with open kitchen. Deep fried scallops delicious, slow roast belly pork excellent. Nice cheese selection. Pic poule good value. Ask for a rectangular table if you want to chat easily as lot if background noise!”
“My wife surprised me with a stay here for my 40th birthday, and it was exactly what I’d hoped for peaceful, secluded, and luxurious. We stayed in one of the wagons tucked away at the back, which offered total privacy and comfort. Inside, it featured a cosy log fire and a deep indoor bath, while the outdoor bath added a unique touch soaking under the trees while the wind rustled through the leaves was unforgettable. We ordered room service for both breakfast and dinner; everything arrived promptly and was exceptional in quality. I also had a massage during our stay my therapist may have been petite, but she was incredibly skilled. I left feeling completely relaxed and free of tension. Our stay was short but memorable. The wagon accommodation was charming, the food outstanding, and the service faultless.”
“a little outside Cantebury is this incredibly charming country house on their own grounds serving farm to table. Looks perfect for an english getaway. We only came for lunch and most of the meals on their menu was also available gluten free. The food was delicious, very well worth the small trip out. The staff were amazing, incredibly friendly, professional and very welcoming. We wandered the grounds (which didn't take long) but it was nice to see the gardens, the plots, and the animals they have around. You really can guarantee that it's farm to table. We didn't stay the night but would definitely recommend if you're in the area for a little something special.”
“What we loved • Smooth check-in and a calm, relaxing atmosphere with friendly service. • Room: we booked the Very Small room—genuinely compact with a bed just big enough for two—but cosy, well designed and spotless. • Bathrooms/showers: excellent. • Dinner: delicious (we had the beef and a few other dishes—see photos) with attentive service. • Kitchen garden tour: a highlight. We loved the garden-to-table approach and the principle of cooking with as many home-grown ingredients as possible. What could be better • Breakfast: felt overcrowded and the service was very slow—we waited about 30 minutes for coffee. Bottom line A very enjoyable couple of days overall. We’d happily return for the ambience, dinner and kitchen garden—hoping breakfast service gets a polish.”
“I just had to drop a quick note to share how much my partner and I absolutely loved our second chance at a couple’s getaway at Bridge Place. Honestly, why wouldn’t we? It’s like the place sprinkles a little magic on every visit! ✨😊 With our crazy work schedules giving us hardly any days off together this month, we decided to celebrate my birthday a bit early and twice at the Pig Hotels—because who says you can’t party before the big day? As always, the team was super friendly, helpful, and welcoming. On arrival to our room, we were in our favourite hop pickers huts 🛖 Ohh and guess what? We got to see the two new piglets! Last time the previous two were much bigger, so it was adorable to catch them at this cute little baby stage—my partner was basically in piglet heaven. 🐷🐷 Dinner? Absolutely top-notch again. The crispy oyster mushrooms and Paul’s Smoked Trout Tartare were so tasty😋 And with the nights getting chillier, the log burner was pure cozy perfection. Picture this: wrapped in a blanket, sipping the PIG’s bespoke herbal tea (Chamomile, Spearmint, Lemon balm, Fennel, Cassia, and Hemp leaf) by the fire whilst playing battleship, mastermind and UNO —my new favourite bedtime ritual! 🍵💤 Last time, my partner missed out on breakfast because of an early work call. Unfortunately, the same this time round, the team kindly prepared a breakfast box for him to take away. He was seriously impressed—and rightly so! Homemade apple, carrot & chia seed muffin plus Gilda bakery goodies? Yes please! 🥐😋 What more could you want to start your day? I enjoyed my garden smoothie and the gluten, dairy free fig and walnut energy bars. So huge thanks again for having us and letting us enjoy this little slice of heaven. We’re already counting down to our next visit—fair warning: we might become very frequent guests! See you all soon! 💛💛”
