Notting Hill's Most Gloriously Eccentric Bolthole
Where champagne baths, celebrity ghosts, and market-morning magic collide in perfect bohemian harmony.
Tucked behind a quietly elegant Georgian townhouse facade on Stanley Gardens, The Portobello Hotel is one of Notting Hill's most deliciously idiosyncratic boltholes. This is a place that has always attracted a certain kind of guest — the ones who travel with dog-eared paperbacks and a taste for the unconventional. Celebrity lore clings to its walls like ivy, and the hotel wears its bohemian credentials with the effortless ease of a vintage kimono. The rooms are theatrical, individual, and unashamedly romantic — a world away from the anonymous luxury of glass-and-steel rivals across the city.
Stay here and you are perfectly positioned for one of London's great sensory pleasures: a morning wander along Portobello Road Market, where antique silverware glints in the pale English light and the smell of fresh bread drifts from the stalls. Return to the hotel and, if the mood takes you, indulge in one of The Portobello's legendary champagne baths — a touch of theatrical decadence that feels entirely in keeping with the spirit of the place. This is not a hotel that tries to be everything to everyone; it knows its audience intimately.
For the free-spirited traveller who finds comfort in character over conformity, The Portobello Hotel delivers something increasingly rare in London's crowded hospitality landscape: a genuine sense of place, personality, and joie de vivre. At a mid-range price point, it represents remarkable value for a hotel that feels, in every way, utterly one of a kind.

What They Say
“My husband and I stayed at Portobello Hotel in August 2025. We had an amazing time. All of the staff were incredibly kind and welcoming. The room itself was gorgeous - I wish I had photos to show everyone. Beautiful, spacious, and overlooked a lovely garden (note: private to next-door residents; not available for hotel guests). The entire hotel is classically elegant with a little eclectic twist. Food and amenities were also great. It's located in Notting Hill, which is very walkable. It's about 10-15 minutes to the nearest tube station as well. We had an amazing time here!”
“I’m not sure what some of the guests below are smoking. Or just plainly, how miserable they are. Wonderful hotel. If you want a taste and/or the feel of Notting Hill - and can’t quite afford to live there - This is for you. Brilliant, smart hosts. Great service. Have been coming here sporadically for 20 years. It ain’t Disneyland. It’s an amazing opportunity to taste life in a lovely part of London. 5 out of 5 isn’t enough.”
“I absolutely loved the style, décor, and facilities of the room — the hotel has real personality and quirky charm throughout. The location is perfect for exploring the Notting Hill neighbourhood, with so much right on your doorstep. The beds were incredibly comfortable, the toiletries were beautiful, and both the shower and bath were excellent — everything felt thoughtful and luxuriously high quality.”
“Quirky, crooked floors, creaky stairs and yet somehow it all works. The rooms are unique and attractively decorated and the place has real charm. The elevator was broken during our stay and we were on the third floor so that was a bit of pain but hopefully, thats a rare occurrence”
“Based on my research, I expected this to be an excellent place to spend our anniversary. However, after interacting with management, I was shocked by how rude and dismissive they were. What the house manager initially fixed, the duty manager eagerly undid. I tried to address and resolve the situation, but was met with agitation and pushback instead of service. Thankfully, we booked with free cancellation through Expedia and were able to avoid what became a service nightmare. I do not recommend booking here. If you’re questioning it, consider this your answer. Perhaps some guests have great experiences, but the moment anything becomes even slightly complicated, so do they. Do not let this behavior discourage you, as this is not the London that we know in love. 🫶🏻🇬🇧”
