Lower Slaughter, Gloucestershire
England's Most Perfect Country Retreat
Where Cotswold stone, croquet lawns and candlelit tasting menus conspire to make leaving utterly unthinkable.
Tucked into the folds of one of England's most achingly beautiful villages, The Slaughters Manor House is the kind of place that makes you exhale the moment you arrive. This striking 17th-century manor sits amid five acres of landscaped gardens in Lower Slaughter, where a idyllic village stream winds past honey-stone cottages and time seems to move at the pace of a slow country walk. With just 19 beautifully appointed rooms and suites, the sense of seclusion and intimacy is absolute — this is Cotswolds England at its most quietly magnificent.
Days here follow a blissfully unhurried rhythm. Slow mornings give way to croquet on the lawn or a set on the tennis court, before long afternoon walks through the surrounding countryside. Come evening, the manor's acclaimed restaurant earns its reputation with menus rooted in seasonality and Cotswold provenance — foraged ingredients, sommelier-paired wines, and the kind of cooking that makes lingering over a tasting menu feel not just permissible but practically obligatory. Afterwards, a nightcap in the cocktail bar or a lazy afternoon tea in the gardens, with Newby London teas and impeccable scones, completes the picture.
For couples in search of a truly quintessential English escape, The Slaughters Manor House is difficult to surpass. It delivers the fantasy of the English country house — the crackling elegance, the garden views, the champagne moments — without a single note of stuffiness. Book it before someone else does.

What They Say
“Beautiful hotel in a lovely, quiet area of the Cotswolds. Staff were excellent. We were particularly impressed with the restaurant staff, both at the morning and the evening service. Loved the hotel and the room. It's always nice when it feels like a privilege to stay somewhere, and The Slaughters certainly gave us this feeling.”
“Amazing break with a beautiful room. Special mentions go to Jamie and Sharon who provided such an amazing service and for looking after our two boys, with all of their requests. Jamie also served us with Afternoon tea upon arrival, impeccable service. Rooms were spacious and comfortable, buys had their two beds made up and enjoyed the cookies. Excellent location.”
“My family and I came for morning coffee today having lived in a local village for years but never ventured inside We certainly won’t be doing it again anytime soon The service was frostier than a cold day in the arctic. We couldn’t have been made to feel Less welcomed or wanted. The amount of times we were told we would need to leave before the afternoon tea people arrived bordered on harassment. The place inside is pretty enough, and their attempts at being “rock n roll” amounts to a few sex pistol pictures making it reminiscent of a teenagers bedroom from 1981. Despite being the dead of winter, they couldn’t be bothered to light the logs in the fireplace so we made do keeping our coats on. Maybe they were understaffed and the staff that was working hates her job, I have no idea. But for what could be a beautiful place to unwind and enjoy the “famous Cotswolds hospitality” certainly isn’t happening in this place A shame”
“Latest visit, not great. Stay away from the savoury afternoon tea. £30 for chunks of bread, piccalilli and some cheese. AND when you query where the rest of it is… “Oh. We’ve changed the menu”. Location itself is however sublime”
“I returned today from staying at this hotel for two nights after taking my elderly mum and my daughter and her best friend. We loved the hotel, the location and the food. Excellent staff especially at breakfast . Beautiful rooms with stunning views. Would definitely recommend others to stay here. The first time visiting the Cotswolds and it did not disappoint. After living abroad and not holidaying in the UK for many years, this hotel made me feel proud to be British.”
