The Tawny Hotel in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire — Woodland Retreat

Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire

Wild at Heart, Wonderfully Close

Where the forest floor meets five-star feeling, and Britain's countryside finally has your full attention.

Tucked within 70 acres of ancient Staffordshire woodland, The Tawny is one of those rare properties that makes you question why you ever boarded a plane. Fifty-five handcrafted accommodations — from lofty treehouses and dreamy boathouses to snug shepherds' huts — are scattered across the estate like well-kept secrets, each designed to dissolve the boundary between interior comfort and the wild world outside. This is immersive nature, but with private spas and beautifully appointed interiors to come home to at the end of a muddy afternoon walk.

What They Say

I recently stayed in the wild orchid retreat and they certainly put the "treat" in retreat. The room was absolutely beautiful with amazing views. From start to finish the staff were incredible, from the young lady on reception (I'm sorry I didn't catch her name) to Alex our porter who took us to our room. We wanted to spend as much time in the room as possible so we ordered room service which was delivered within 20mins and still warm. All the products in the rooms aswell were fantastic and use all of them 😬 We had a lovely nights stay and looking forward to our next visit in another retreat!

A relaxing stay but given the price point I’d expect more attention to detail for it to live up to 5* luxury. Only cheap Prosecco in the mini bar - no beers, wine, champers. Boiler not able to keep up with filling the outdoor hot tub. Dog eared, laminated(!!) and dated wine lists in the restaurant… don’t get me started on the font. Cheap plastic Christmas trees. No actual gym or spa. Massage room is really random and space/detail not well finished. Quality / style of decor in places is a bit naff. Positives… The setting is stunning, it was really peaceful and the staff were nice, but if you’re into the small stuff and you compare with the Farm House (or similar) on quality it’s not up there for me.

What a wonderful stay we had at The Tawny. We were celebrating our 50th wedding anniversary and wanted somewhere special, where we could relax in nature. The meet and greet was great with Darren taking us to the Glade shepherd hut.A charming guy and extremely friendly. The service throughout was attentive but unpretentious We were particularly impressed with front of house during our 2 evening meals in the Plumbicorn restaurant. A very special location with very special service.Thankyou. Lynda and Martin Moulds

This hotel is nothing short of exceptional. It was the perfect location to celebrate our wedding anniversary. The rooms are well designed and have stunning views over the grounds. It’s so peaceful and a perfect place to unwind. The staff were all so welcoming and helpful- nothing was too much trouble. We had a meal at the restaurant and also had a picnic in the grounds- both were first class. If you have a special occasion to celebrate I wouldn’t hesitate to book this hotel.

Arrived early for a wedding and went into the bar. Great welcome and service from Grace, she was chatty, pleasant and helpful. Had drinks and flat breads, really excellent food and good portions. Would now think about staying at the resort as a guest. We loved the look and feel of the Tawny and had a great time at the Wedding venue too.
