Itteringham, Norfolk
Norfolk's Most Quietly Brilliant Pub
Where the lanes run out and the good life begins.
Tucked into the folds of the Norfolk countryside, the Walpole Arms in the quietly beautiful village of Itteringham is the kind of place that makes you wonder why you ever bother leaving England. This quintessential 18th-century pub wears its heritage with easy confidence β think crackling fires, a convivial bar, and the sort of unhurried village atmosphere that city life has long since forgotten. It is, in every sense, a proper British pub; and yet it is so much more than that.
The kitchen is the undisputed heart of the operation, turning out inventive, seasonally-driven dishes built on the very best of Norfolk's larder. Locally sourced ingredients are treated with real culinary ambition, and the Sunday roast alone is worth making the journey for. The pub also has a remarkable second identity as the home of Gyre & Gimble, an internationally recognised gin distillery whose small-batch, handcrafted spirits are poured with quiet pride behind the bar. Gin lovers can even book a distillery experience at the brand's Norwich Gin Academy β a genuinely memorable add-on to any stay.
For those seeking a restorative rural escape without sacrificing good food or good drink, the Walpole Arms delivers with warmth and unpretentious charm. Whether you're curled up beside the fire with a perfectly mixed Norfolk gin or lingering over a beautifully plated main course, this is staycation England at its most deeply satisfying. Book a table, book a room, and let the countryside do the rest.

What They Say
βWent for a Sunday roast today, first time going and we werenβt disappointed. Had a bit of a wait after ordering but they were very busy! Food was delicious, amazing yorkshires, delicious veg and crispy potatoes. Only criticism would be the vegetarian option- a homemade wellington or nut roast would have been preferable to the bought in nut/ veg loaf I was served. Beautiful pub, good atmosphere, very friendly staff - will definitely be back!β
βLovely Saturday afternoon lunch with friends. Sat outside in the late summer sunshine in the garden, which was glorious until it started raining, when we bolted inside to the waiting comfort of sturdy "olde worldie" pub furnishings for dessert. Brilliant. Lovely food, and a good choice of options. Good, smiley staff, children's menu with crayons and colouring. Everything was great, will be back.β
βFood was amazing had a few sides as a starter! The truffle mac and cheese was amazing lots of flavour garlic and a lovely tasting cheese. I had ox cheek for my main absolutely banging, so tender will plenty of flavour! I would definitely come back here for food a lovely pub and great service from the staffβ
βBeautiful, cozy pub with delicious offerings and friendly wait staff, once you've been seated ... unfortunately, the hostess was very surly and not someone I would choose to deal with again. Luckily, the rest of the staff couldn't have been more friendly and helpful. The roast chicken was very good and the roast beef received rave reviews from our party as well. Try the fig bake well for dessert.β
βOur first time here and it was a great find on our weekend away. We booked last minute for a Sunday lunch with the family. The kids roast dinner was almost the same size as mine, our seven year old was delighted! Excellent food and good choice of drinks. One we will visit again on our next trip to Norfolk πβ
