Felin Fach, Powys
Wales at Its Most Restorative
Where the Beacons meet the table, and time slows to something closer to pleasure.
Tucked into the gentle folds of the Brecon Beacons, where the Black Mountains meet the storied bookshops of Hay-on-Wye, the Felin Fach Griffin is that rarest of things: a place that feels genuinely unhurried. This converted Welsh pub has been transformed into a quietly acclaimed dining destination, yet it has lost none of the warmth you'd hope to find on a rain-softened evening in Powys. The fires are lit, the beers are chosen with care, and the welcome feels earned rather than performed.
The kitchen is the beating heart of the Griffin, and it shows. The cooking is straightforward in the best possible sense — rooted in local produce, executed with confidence, and entirely free of pretension. Seasonal menus draw from the surrounding landscape, and the wine list carries the same thoughtful, personal touch. Rooms are contemporary and quietly luxurious, built around the promise of the most comfortable beds in the Beacons and a genuinely restorative night's sleep.
The Griffin is best appreciated by those who arrive on foot — boots muddied from the hills, appetite sharpened by moorland air — and leave having eaten and slept rather better than they expected. Couples will find it romantic without effort; walkers will find it perfectly pitched. It sets its prices, refreshingly, for its regulars rather than passing tourists. That philosophy, more than anything, is what makes this corner of mid-Wales worth the journey.

What They Say
“Stopped here for a Sunday lunch and it absolutely exceeded our expectations. I had the lamb while my partner had beef. The cauliflower cheese was delicious and even the cabbage was the best I’ve ever had. The entrees were delicious too and we were given complementary home made bread which was delicious. Our red wine pairing was fabulous too, and all the staff were so attentive and lovely. Would highly recommend for anyone visiting the area.”
“Went for Sunday lunch to celebrate my Mum's 83 birthday. The three course lunch was all amazing, especially the lamb. Special thanks to Laura and all the staff for looking after us for going that extra mile to spoil my Mum. The whole lunch experience was brilliant. I can highly recommend The Griffin for a special Sunday meal. Thanks all and we look forward to joining you again.”
“We went for lunch. It was truly amazing. Gorgeous food and wine. Amazing service in a wonderful rustic atmosphere in front of a lovely fire. Yes, it can be expensive but gosh it was delicious. Toilets were so so clean. I thank everyone who works there for giving us an amazing experience. I wish you all well. Thank you so much.”
“My wife and I have driven on the A470 on the way from A to B, passing the Felin Fach Griffin hundreds of times. We are on a weekend away in the area, so booked a meal here. The service was excellent and the food cooked perfectly.”
“Room for improvement. We went as a large group for Sunday lunch and it was a very mixed bag. On the plus side the lamb was outrageously good, probably the best I've ever had, the ambiance is fantastic and puddings are superb. Unfortunately the service is not that great, with a few exceptions. The roast potatoes were rock solid, the veg main was poor and the veg burned, pate arrived without bread. All in all worth a visit, but I've had many better Sunday lunches elsewhere, except the lamb...that was absolutely divine.”
