Clifftop Magic on Dorset's Coast
Where kitchen garden feasts meet golden sands and the Jurassic Coast stretches endlessly beyond your window.
Perched dramatically on the clifftops above Studland Bay, THE PIG-on the beach is the kind of place that makes you want to cancel your return train home before you've even unpacked. Part of the beloved PIG family, this mellow yellow retreat on Dorset's Jurassic Coast delivers that rare alchemy of barefoot ease and genuine culinary ambition — a path winds down from the grounds to golden sands, log fires roar in the lounges, and gargoyles peer cheerfully from the stonework as if they too are rather pleased with the view across to Old Harry Rocks.
Food, as ever with the PIGs, is the beating heart of the experience. The conservatory restaurant turns out seasonal British dishes rooted in the walled Kitchen Garden and heritage greenhouse, with ingredients sourced from no more than 25 miles away — crab from the coast, produce from the polytunnels, mushrooms from their own mushroom house. Eating here feels both principled and deeply pleasurable, the kind of meal that makes you reconsider everything you thought you knew about a British staycation.
For those in need of deeper restoration, the Potting Shed treatments have been cleverly reimagined as Sheep Hut rooms with staggering views of Old Harry Rocks, where naturally nourishing massages are administered to the soundtrack of Dorset's coastal winds. With Enid Blyton once a devoted regular in these parts, there's an undeniable sense of Famous Five adventure in the air — only this time, the ginger beer has been upgraded considerably.

What They Say
“We booked the Roundhouse for my partners 40th Birthday. The food was outstanding and really good value for money at £55 per head for 3 courses. The service was impeccable and was amazing. Our waiter (I didn’t get his name sadly) was very attentive throughout the day. We cannot thank him and the team enough. We throughly enjoyed our day and we’ll definitely be back.”
“Wow!! What a fantastic stayaway. A surprise gift for my Birthday couldn't have been any better. The most beautiful place inside and out and that is even in the Winter. So cozy and Christmasy, the staff were amazing! The Pigs attention to detail is incredible making you feel at home every step of the way. Well, food...... absolutely delicious paired with some excellent wine served with a smile. Breakfast stunning!! and the icing on the cake, an hours massage with the wonderful Megan (a must if you are fortunate to stay here) Would highly recommend this hotel, you wont be disappointed!!!”
“I love this place have visited several times. Sadly looking a bit tatty and grubby. Food - Crispy kale was extremely greasy (would hate to think what the calories were) Mushroom starter with a miniscule amount of cheese was far too salty, greasy, overcooked unfresh mushrooms very good flavour though. A disappointing treat for my guest 😞”
“Booked here for my wife’s birthday and we loved it. Quirky rooms, characterful and charming building, really atmospheric bar and public rooms, with roaring fires in the winter. The cocktails were excellent. And you’re just a very short walk to the beach. I would highly recommend booking the restaurant too for any evenings you are here as the food is great. All in all, a great hotel and one we’ll visit again”
“We just had lunch here on Christmas Eve and to be honest it was a bit of a disappointment. Arrived and had to wait 30 mins before having our order taken. Wine arrived but no sign of a beer menu. Finally get our beers 40 mins after arrival which was frustrating when a lot of staff could be seen standing around with their arms crossed having a chat. Food took another 40 mins to arrive only for 3 of the fish dishes to be overcooked and disappointing. Pork was very nice, but a side was forgotten (unsurprisingly given the waiter seemingly didn’t write anything down). When prompted, he seemed to just put in the order and it arrived once we’d almost finished our meal. We did complain about the service and the fish and were “compensated” with 4 beers being taken off the bill but the discretionary service was still on it - had it not been Christmas Eve, we’d have asked for that to be removed too. On the whole, not good at all. It also wasn’t very busy, there were multiple empty tables around us. Edit: My brother in law and I ended up in bed all day on Christmas Day being sick, neither of us had eaten anything since this meal, nor had anyone else gone down ill so the only assumption could have been food poisoning. Not a nice way to spend Christmas.”
